GRE: Structure & Syllabus

The GRE General Test is a computer-delivered, section-adaptive examination administered by ETS. It takes approximately 1 hour and 58 minutes and consists of three measures.

Analytical Writing: 1 essay task | 30 minutes

Verbal Reasoning: 27 questions across 2 sections | 41 minutes

Quantitative Reasoning: 27 questions across 2 sections | 47 minutes

Scoring: Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored from 130–170, with a combined score of 260–340. Analytical Writing is scored separately from 0–6.

Calculator: An on-screen calculator is available during Quantitative Reasoning.

The exam uses section-adaptive testing, meaning the difficulty of the second Verbal or Quantitative section depends on your performance in the first.

The GRE Verbal Reasoning section assesses your ability to understand written information, analyse relationships between ideas and interpret vocabulary in context.

Reading Comprehension: Understand and interpret passages, identify main ideas and evaluate information.

Text Completion: Select appropriate words to complete sentences and passages based on context.

Sentence Equivalence: Identify pairs of words that create sentences with equivalent meanings.

Vocabulary Development: Strengthen advanced vocabulary and contextual understanding.

Critical Reading: Develop strategies to understand complex written material.

The GRE Quantitative Reasoning section assesses your ability to understand mathematical concepts, interpret numerical information and apply problem-solving skills.

Arithmetic and Number Concepts: Develop a strong foundation in numerical reasoning and calculations.

Algebra: Solve equations, interpret expressions and apply algebraic concepts.

Geometry: Understand shapes, measurements and geometric relationships.

Data Analysis: Interpret tables, charts and numerical information.

Quantitative Comparison: Compare mathematical quantities and determine their relationships.

Problem-Solving: Apply mathematical reasoning to solve GRE-style questions.
